Last year, Seattle’s Nacho Picasso gave away his dark, funny and somewhat nerdy debut For The Glory. Haunted by his father’s passing and informed by his obsession with tattoos and comic books, For the Glory at its worst was a solid debut from a guy overly dependent on punchlines, and at its best it was an anti-industry calling card for a confidently quirky up-and-coming rapper.
Lord of the Fly, which pairs Nacho with frequent production collaborator Blue Sky Black Death, finds him exploring lots of the same concepts, but now stretching his ability to shape imagery as he reminisces. Some of Nacho’s humor is lost in the process, but the album takes on a wintry mood abetted by Blue Sky Black Death’s production.
Take the lead single (video below), “Naked Lunch” (a reference to the bizarre drug-influenced book/movie of the same name) where Nacho brags about being “drunk as Jack Sparrow”. Over whirring synths from BSBD, he details his drug abuse, occasionally taking pause to explain his behavior “since my dad died, the drug’s made a difference”. Even if the album is not always such an honest exploration of Nacho’s psyche, Nacho’s personality compensates for those shortcomings with overconfident shit-talking.
