Dawes @ The Music Box 11.20.11

Last night Dawes concluded their co-headlining tour with Blitzen Trapper at the Music Box in Hollywood. The band’s return to their hometown seemed to be perfect timing, as lead singer and guitar player Taylor Goldsmith hardly had a voice after the 2-month stretch. Somehow though, Taylor’s voice was hardly affected, and his incredible tone and energy moved the crowd to a soul shaking sing along; necessary at any proper Dawes show.

Their hometown show also attracted some heavy hitters in the music industry, both on stage and off. Industry figure and author Bob Lefsetz was in the crowd, tweeting up a storm and noting his amazement at Taylor’s ability to “sing and wail on his Fender at the same time. Kinda like Bruce Springsteen.” During the set, Big Star drummer Jody Stephens joined the boys for their cover of his band’s tune “The Ballad of El Goodo.” The band was also honored to have keyboardist Benmont Tench of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers join them on stage during the encore for two songs he helped record on their latest album, “Time Spent in Los Angeles” and “Fire Away.” After this past summer’s show at the Satellite in Silver Lake, where the boys played with Jackson Browne, Dawes now has several legendary collaborations under their belt. Including their next scheduled show on December 6th, and intimate performance in Woodstock, NY at Levon Helm’s Ramble, the personal studio and performance space of the former drummer and vocalist for The Band. Things are only getting better for these hometown heroes, which in our book, is absolutely dawesome.
