Cities Aviv – “Wet Dream”

Cities Aviv-
Former punk rock singer/current talented Memphis rapper Cities Aviv seems poised to gain notoriety in the coming months. On the heels of his solid Digital Lows album released earlier this year, Aviv’s name began to make waves in the sorts of internet circles inclined to check former punk singer turned rappers. An increased public appetite for genre-pushing rap artists unwilling to be sonically pinned down to a geography (for the better) makes him a particularly interesting rapper at this moment.

While certain internet-friendly rappers may appear to push the “weird” envelope for weirdness’s sake, Aviv is merely a highly personal rapper desirous of articulating his nuanced personality. His raps are introspective and self-deprecating, but also flash egotism and ambition. Merely 22-years old, he deftly pokes fun at norms, while worrying about his future.

This track, available over at Aviv’s bandcamp, is a cut that merits attention. Producer RPLD Ghosts flips the same Alessi Brothers “Oh Lori” sample (shouts to Brandon Soderberg for the credit) as the memorable Digital Lows cut, “Meet Me on Montrose (for Ex Lovers Only)” and warps it, using distorted claps to make it a beat that engulfs one’s ears when listened to with headphones.

Aviv flashes love-fueled energy, spitting bars that wax on his modest popularity and attempt to charm the woman in question. In so doing, he crafts an ode to summertime love that feels oddly well-suited for fall.
