Toby Burke – Mexico City

Toby Burke is just my cup of tea, or I guess better said, just my bottle of beer. His sound is quiet and distant, reminiscent of the reverb drenched My Morning Jacket circa At Dawn. His voice is a beautiful blend of grit and southern draw with a strong lean towards Ryan Adams. His recently released album Mexico City is the kind of album I’ve been missing. It’s an album raw like Heartbreaker but with a distinct small-town setting like Jacksonville City Nights. The songs meander along some sort of gravel road, they build, but they build with details that cautiously weave their way in and out. Perhaps most refreshing about the album is the way Burke allows the songs to just “be”. There is no gimmick, or tricks in production.  The album isn’t slick, or hip in any which way. But the songs are honest, and the melodies are beautiful, so what else do you need…
