From an artists perspective, you would think that following Album would be a daunting task. As quickly as Girls rose to indie sweethearts, they could have come crashing down in half the time with a less than stellar follow up. But it is clear what the band’s strengths are. Album wasn’t a collection of songs playing up the style de jour in the blog world. Album was a testament to the fact that strong song writing can exist in a world full of lo-fi gimmicks and electro nonsense. Girls returns on “Broke Dreams Club EP” doing everything they do best- writing beautifully crafted pop songs full of angst and catchy hooks, often from the perspective of a teenage girl. “Thee Oh So Protective One” is everything that made you love “Lust For Life” only bolstered by flourishes of a slightly larger recording budget (some nice brass accents). While alot of bands use the luxuries of the studio to try and cover up for sloppy second album song writing- Girls seem to understand that a little goes along way. The entire EP is phenomenal, showing growth from Album but staying true to the sensibilities that generated them hype in the first place.
